The Ya-Yas - sworn lifelong friends of Vivi - stage an unorthodox "intervention" to bring daughter and mother together in this warm, winning adaptation of Rebecca Well's bestsellers, written for the screen and directed by Thelma & Louise Academy Award winner Callie Khouri.

Amazon.ca

For her directorial debut, Callie Khouri, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Thelma and Louise, chose to adapt Rebecca Wells' bestselling novel, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. It was a wise choice, as she transforms this dramedy into a work that is far more profound than it initially appears. As little girls, four friends who dubbed themselves the Ya-Yas swore loyalty to one another. Years later, they honor that promise when a conflict erupts between one of them, Vivi, and her daughter, Sidda Lee. For although Vivi has become a respectable and refined lady, she was far from an exemplary mother. The Ya-Yas then delve back into their memories to help the daughter understand her mother's eccentric past and to forgive her. Callie Khouri has succeeded in creating a nuanced and often accurate film, bringing together delightful actresses such as Ashley Judd, dazzling as the young Vivi, and Maggie Smith, delectable as a dry-witted Ya-Ya with a heart of gold. She recreates this sometimes harsh tale quite skillfully, delivering a pleasant film filled with ingenious flashbacks and supported by a fairly well-executed dramatic progression. Constantly oscillating between bittersweet, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood avoids taking a path that is too conventional and, despite a musical score that is overly sugary, casts a fresh and moving look at the difficult relationship between mother and daughter. --Helen Faradji

UPC: 085392330829

EAN: 9780790771984

Languages: English

Binding: DVD

Item Condition: UsedVeryGood

https://id-shop-ca.myshopify.com/en/products/divine-secrets-of-the-ya-ya-sisterhood-widescreen-import
