On one side, a \"rookie,\" idealistic, armed with good intentions and a somewhat naive sense of the rule of law. It is Ethan Hawke—\nGattaca—who lends him his angelic and magnetic features. At his side, to support him, Denzel Washington—\nThe Hurricane—embodies a true loose cannon who does not hesitate to cross the yellow line between the world of the bad boys and that of justice. Short hair, goatee on his chin, he is more animal than the wolves he brushes up against. An impressive metamorphosis, for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2002. To account for the film's qualities, one should also mention the lighting by Mauro Fiore, which contributes to gradually tipping this training day into the darkness of destruction; the veracity of David Ayer’s screenplay, a child of the neighborhoods he describes; the multiple supporting roles, from those tough guys Scott Glenn (\nThe Right Stuff) and Tom Berenger (\nPlatoon), to the appearances of rappers Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, as well as soul singer Macy Gray.
