His raspy, sensual voice, capable of embellishing the slightest ditty with imaginary arabesques, burst onto the scene during the first Algerian Raï Festival in 1985. These vocals, bearing the mark of Moroccan melodies and naturally detested by fundamentalists, led him toward a more tolerant elsewhere. Success followed success, from "Didi," recorded in 1992 with Don Was, to "Aïcha," composed by Jean-Jacques Goldman. Bolstered by the international fame of the 1, 2, 3 Soleils tour performed alongside Rachid Taha and Faudel, he then recorded Kenza, named after his second daughter. He entrusted its production to two genius tinkerers: Steve Hillage of System 7, ex-Gong, a legend of English progressive rock and Rachid Taha's usual playmate, and Lati Kronlund, founder of the New York collective Brooklyn Funk Essentials. Across fourteen tracks, Khaled meets Amar, a young muse of the Anglo-Pakistani scene ("El Harba Wine"), Noa, an Israeli singer ("Imagine" by John Lennon), and brings together the scratches of a New York hip-hop DJ ("El Aâdyene") with the drum'n'bass programming of Sam Zaman of State of Bengal, a leading group of the Asian Underground scene ("Mele Hbiti"). Between raï and salsa, Egyptian string ensembles, and avant-garde techniques, Khaled wanders with his cheerful air between London, Cairo, New York, and Paris, enchanting listeners with his music of seven perfumes and twelve aromas.
--Sabrina Silamo

UPC: 731454339728

EAN: 0731454339728

Languages: english

Binding: Audio CD

Item Condition: New
