The voice is still raspy, but seems more at peace. The arrangements, by turns hushed or joyfully intoxicating, flow naturally to serve an astonishing, absurd, and penetrating poetry. Where does this apparent maturity come from? Perhaps he has finally found in “Madame X” the “ideal woman” he had hoped for since Trouble-Fête, his previous album.
