Details: Product Description Corneille Parce qu'on vient de loin Amazon.ca Few Quebec artists have taken an interest in soul, the musical style brilliantly championed by Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Corneille, a Quebecer by adoption who miraculously survived the Rwandan genocide, offers his vision of the genre with Parce qu’on vient de loin. Surrounded by producer Sonny Black (Yvon Krevé, Dubmatique) and a team of renowned musicians (Maurice Soso Williams, Bobby Cohen, Richard Beaudet), the 25-year-old singer delivers a personal debut album where the horror of the past mingles with the happiness of the present. The tracks, which are particularly notable for their thoughtful lyrics, also find their strength in the chosen instrumentation. By using acoustic guitars and rhythms similar to hip hop, Corneille succeeds in revisiting soul in his own way, modernizing it and distancing it from clichés. His voice, slightly nasal, finds its place with ease and conveys his nightmares ("Seul au monde"), his ambitions ("Rêves de star"), and his optimism ("Terre") with astonishing serenity. Catchy and well-balanced, Parce qu’on vient de loin is more than just a skillful album; it is proof that Francophone soul has a place in Quebec. --Nicolas Houle
