Details: Amazon.ca Kevin Parent faced quite a challenge when it came time to record his second album. How do you create a worthy successor to *Pigeon d'argile*, a string of hits that sold over 350,000 copies? It cannot be said that the folk-rock singer failed at the task, but he was unable to recreate the magic on *Grand Parleur, Petit Faiseur*. While the production is meticulous, the cover is superb, and the team of musicians is formidable, the songs themselves suffer from several shortcomings. It is in the lyrics that the Gaspé artist disappoints the most. Obsessed with his own navel, he lacks subtlety in recounting his bouts of debauchery ("Fréquenter l'oubli"), his emotional problems ("Maudite Jalousie"), or psychological issues ("Psychologue"). Only the ironic "Tu pourras dire" stands out, offering a lucid and funny look at the world of show business. Fortunately, Parent manages to counterbalance these weaknesses thanks to the effectiveness of his music: the performance is spot-on, the arrangements are impeccable, and the melodies prove solid enough to carry rather lackluster choruses. In short, there are good passages in an uneven album. --Nicolas Houle
