Details: Amazon.ca Écoute pas ça revealed a sexagenarian Jean-Pierre Ferland at the peak of his craft. Recorded in 1995 at his sugar shack in Saint-Norbert, this magnificent album gives the listener the feeling of having slipped into that country house alongside a Ferland who is showing them the map of his heart. The acoustic musical backdrop, provided essentially by the expert six strings of Alain Leblanc and Bob Cohen, reinforces this sense of intimacy. Generous, even shameless, the singer-songwriter draws attention to the marks that a life of excess has carved into his face ("After Shave"), to his "28 open wounds and 82 bruises." Yet, his heart, which has beaten too fast and too hard, remains immense, and it is above all love that this eternal romantic sings about here: love of women (the title track, "Une chance qu'on s'a"), of his roots ("Envoye à maison"), of music ("La Musique")… Far from any mercantile "kitsch," the artist invites us to a true profession of faith in love. "The good Lord who makes Ireland and Bosnia/To apologize/He makes lovers," he suggests in "Il faut des amoureux." A good thing he did, as the good Lord also made Ferland. --Frédéric Murphy
