Alain Lefèvre, mostly known for his acclaimed work as a concert pianist, offers us his second album as a composer. The eleven compositions on ''Carnet de notes'' reflect the artist's talent, sensibility and great humanity. The artist is joined by Jorane on "Confidences" and "La Robe du Château". The album also benefits from the participation of Paul Brochu and Alain Caron on "Philip Black Blue". Amazon.ca Carnet de notes, as its title suggests, is a series of moods, impressions, and musical metaphors developed over the course of the travels, reflections, and attachments of Quebec pianist and composer Alain Lefèvre. As in Lylatov, Alain Lefèvre shares a part of his inner life with us, without pretension or pathos, despite an emerging emotion that is the essential engine of his compositions. "La Solitude," "La Robe du château," "Songe à Charlevoix," "Thalassa," "Confidences," "Pourquoi," "Balalaïka," and "Lettre à Théo" are all hymns to life, to music, to wine, to friendship, and even to his pet cat. While the style is fairly conventional and without any great surprises, the works on Carnet de notes are touching and simple. Also worth noting is the participation of singer and cellist Jorane on this recording, which aims to be accessible. --Dominique Olivier
