Details: Amazon.ca Following the highly successful *Deux Secondes*, Quebec filmmaker Manon Briand was able to benefit from the support of producer Luc Besson for her second feature film. Crowned Best Canadian Feature Film by the audience at the 2002 World Film Festival, *Chaos and Desire* (La Turbulence des fluides) skillfully blends destiny, science, and emotion. Alice is a seismologist in Tokyo. When the tides disappear in her hometown of Baie-Comeau, she is inevitably sent back, much to her reluctance. She discovers that other strange phenomena are shaking the small town, and the heavy, humid climate does nothing to help her maintain the scientific rigor she needs. Yet, it is only by letting her guard down that Alice will be able to notice the handsome Marc Vandal. Desire, disorder, danger: these are the three themes under which Manon Briand places this feature film. With great maturity, she explores the almost cosmic connection that links the sea, the earth, and the body. Both heavy and light, the film possesses subtle dialogue, delivered by an ever-charismatic Pascale Bussières as a woman subject to forces beyond her control, and a haunting Jean-Nicolas Verreault as a bewildered airplane pilot, not to mention the presence of the all-too-rare Geneviève Bujold. A work of atmosphere more than action, electric and quasi-supernatural, *Chaos and Desire* also relies on consistent direction and a haunting soundtrack, establishing itself as a rich, complex, and complete film. --Helen Faradji
