Details: Product Description Director Spike Jonze delivers a stunningly original comedy that seamlessly blends fictional characters and situations with the lives of real people: obsessive orchid hunter John Laroche (Cooper), NewYorker journalist Susan Orlean (Streep), Hollywood screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Cage), and his twin brother, Donald (also Cage). As Charlie struggles to adapt Orlean's best-selling book "The OrchidThief," he writes himself into his own movie. The various stories crash into one another exploding into a wildly imaginative film. ADAPTATION, the year's most talked about movie, is at once a hilarious drama and a moving comedy. Amazon.ca In 2000, director Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman established themselves as the most promising duo in American independent cinema with the imaginative Being John Malkovich. They are reunited once again in Adaptation, which, even if it lacks the brilliance of its predecessor, shines with its originality. The idea is simple: Kaufman had tried, in vain, to adapt the novel The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean. He therefore used his own failure as the subject of his screenplay. Nicolas Cage becomes Charlie Kaufman here, a neurotic and fearful screenwriter with a more talented twin brother. In parallel, the story follows the relationship between the book's author (Meryl Streep) and her subject, an orchid poacher (Chris Cooper, Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor). Moving breezily between different levels of reality, Jonze and Kaufman explore the nature of cinematic creation. Unfortunately, the plots are sometimes confusing and hinder the coherence of the reflection, particularly when the screenwriter's story and the author's story merge in a clumsy attempt to create a surprising ending. In fact, even if the project's audacity is to be applauded, the predominance of the screenplay over the direction is too often disorienting for Adaptation to truly live up to what the two partners are capable of offering. --Helen Faradji
