Although their straight-ahead buzzsaw Punk may not raise eyebrows today, when these albums were originally released 30 years ago, they signaled a change in the musical climate and kick-started the Punk Rock movement! The Ramones didn't set out to create a new scene, they just wanted to take Rock back to basics and keep the songs short and catchy without those somewhat distracting guitar solos. It is important to realize that punk would likely not have had the same resonance, the same impact, or even the same face without the Ramones. What the New York band announced from their first album in 1976 was the necessity (after the freezing years of progressive rock and the vain perspiration of disco) of a return to raw energy with basic instruments (guitar, bass, drums) and the conciseness of the message. Add to this a melodic requirement worthy of the best verses of the Beach Boys, and a good sense of humor, and you have the perfect illustration of the pleasure a pop song can provide. A lively, intense, and ephemeral pleasure. "California Sun", "Blitzkrieg Bop", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" say nothing else; for it must be added that this CD contains the quintessence of the Ramones' art.
