Details: Following the commercial success of Analyze This, which even inspired the television series The Sopranos, Warner studios crafted a sequel. Reunited with Billy Crystal and Robert De Niro, who also served as producers, Analyze That continues to explore the relationship between a mafia boss and his psychoanalyst.

After an assassination attempt in prison, Paul Vitti seems to descend into madness. He hums tunes from West Side Story before falling into a catatonic state. The authorities then decide, on the condition that the mobster gets back on the straight and narrow, to release him into the care of his therapist, who has just lost his father and is suffering from terrible anxiety attacks.

Making a successful sequel is a difficult task, and Analyze That is no exception to the rule. Of course, the humor of the first film is still present: a few gags are even reminiscent of Woody Allen, and De Niro's comedic strength is not to be underestimated. However, the film as a whole never really takes off. Perhaps because some of the lines are clichés, or perhaps because the pacing quickly runs out of steam. Or perhaps it is simply the unpleasant impression that the producers were content to take the same ingredients and start all over again. --Helen Faradji
