Details: Amazon.ca A true classic of Quebec popular culture, Les Belles Histoires des pays d'en haut have inspired numerous creators since their original publication in Claude-Henri Grignon's 1933 novel. Having given rise to a radio serial and three film adaptations, it is perhaps on television that these Belles Histoires found their greatest resonance. In the village of Ste-Adèle in the Laurentians, in 1890, at the height of the colonization of northern Quebec, mayor Séraphin Poudrier (Jean-Pierre Masson) forces the beautiful Donalda (Andrée Champagne)—who is in love with the young and vigorous Alexis (Gabriel Gascon)—into marriage. It is around this romantic framework that the Belles Histoires recounted the daily life of the village and gave birth to endearing and now mythical characters: Father Labelle (Paul Desmarteaux), Father Ovide (Pierre Daigneault), and, of course, Séraphin the miser. Aired from 1957 to 1970, the 495 episodes of the series certainly left a deeper mark on the Quebec collective consciousness than most others. A selection of thirty-nine episodes (in color and black and white) is now offered in two box sets of five DVDs each. The first offers some 75 minutes of never-before-seen scenes grouped under the title "Les Péchés capitaux" (The Seven Deadly Sins) and the second 90 minutes, titled "Humour, amour et rendez-vous" (Humor, Love and Rendezvous). A wonderful opportunity to reconnect with your memories or learn a little more about one of the pillars of the Quebec psyche. -- Helen Faradji
