Details: Product Description Nastassia Kinski stars as Irena, a beautiful young woman on the bridge of sexuality; she discovers love for the first time only to find that the explosive experience brings with it tragic consequences. The tremendous passion of this girl's first romantic love is so strong, however, it bypasses the chaos around her - including her brother's (Malcolm McDowell) extraordinary demands - as it pushes her on to her own bizarre destiny. With a style as timeless as myth, Cat People is an erotic fantasy of the passion and terror that surround this girl's first love. Desire… passion… blood, her lust transforms her into one of the Cat People. Amazon.ca A remake of the classic fantasy film by Jacques Tourneur, starring Simone Simon in the title role, Cat People could have been just another good B-movie if not for the personality of its director, Paul Schrader. A screenwriter for Martin Scorsese – Taxi Driver, Bringing Out the Dead – or Brian de Palma – Obsession – this inveterate cinephile – author of a thesis on Dreyer, Bresson, and Ozu – began directing in 1978 with a social comedy, Blue Collar, followed by the immense success of American Gigolo. An uneven body of work followed, from which emerge Light Sleeper, Affliction, and Mishima. The plot of Cat People allows Paul Schrader to instill all his formal and thematic obsessions: his fascination with the death drives at work in the sexual act, his curiosity about the triggers of violence, his taste for parables on redemption and grace—all elements brilliantly condensed in this 4th film from the screenwriter of Raging Bull. It must be said that he succeeded in capturing the animality of Nastassja Kinski like no one else, as she reveals herself to be just as sensual as she is feline while discovering herself, her destiny, and the onset of her first erotic impulses. And even if Giorgio Moroder's typically eighties music may seem invasive and Schrader's touch a bit heavy where the original remained mysterious and poetic, this erotic dream about our animal side is well worth watching with eyes wide open. -- Sylvain Lefort Special Features Cat People: An Intimate Portrait Feature Commentary with Director Paul Schrader On the Set with the Director Paul Schrader Special Makeup Effects by Tom Burman Cat People Matte Paintings Filmmaker Robert Wise on the Producer of the Original Cat People, Val Lewton Production Photographs Theatrical Trailer Production Notes Recommendations
