Her royal upbringing ends abruptly when her parents are killed and she must flee to Paris with her grandmother, alone and penniless. Life is difficult for Zoya for several years, until she meets and falls in love with Clayton Andrews, a handsome American soldier. Despite her grandmother's opposition, they marry and move to New York.
