Amazon.ca Clash fans take note: two twenty-two-year-old kids have decided to take up the mantle! The Ego War project is a condensed burst of pop energy, blending the frenetic side of The Who with the disillusioned discourse of The Kinks, all wrapped in bass lines inspired by long hours spent in raves. The effect sought here is efficiency at any cost, borrowing, if necessary, from the Happy Mondays as well as Armand Van Helden, and everything else that might come to mind, with no genre restrictions. Thus, it is this boundless spontaneity—a true punk state of mind—that is felt in the energy released by the compositions of this duo from the western suburbs of London. The lyrics are not always rosy and are often raw, if not provocative, but the tone seems authentic and simply reflects the enthusiasm of a youth, eaten away by boredom, having found a salvaging means of expression. The result: a powerful house sound infused as much with ska as with UK garage, a dancefloor sound with the festive charm of Squeeze and Madness. The Audio Bullys are therefore stirring the ashes of new wave, ska, and punk—quite surprising for two guys who weren't born in 1980! But a songwriter like Simon Franks, who is capable of citing The Specials, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles as references, as well as Biggie Smalls, Method Man, or even Blondie and The Police, seems to possess a culture and an open-mindedness sharp enough to embark on such a crossover project. And it is precisely with this lack of prejudice about music that Simon and Tom seem determined to seduce dancefloors all over the world... Let's wish them good luck. Luc Demont
