Amazon.ca The last time we heard from P18, the collective was performing its electro-salsa formula live in concert halls around the world. It was quite an adventure, experienced by 10 musicians and dancers, during which the group brought the energy that defines their approach to the stage. From these live experiences, the group's leader, Tom Darnal (formerly of Mano Negra), was keen to preserve the wild strength of the collective, the improvised party, and the intimacy between the musicians, who were joined by numerous high-profile guests (saxophonist Femi Kuti, percussionists Amadito Valdes and Isquierdo Lopez, or singer R.E. Hernandez Alvarez) who came to join in the fun for a few tracks. To conceive Electropica, a mature and accomplished second album, P18 therefore set out in search of the ideal balance between this live power, the extraordinary artistic possibilities of this mix between electronics and Afro-Cuban traditions, and the sonic rigor essential to avoid distorting the freshness of this new fusion. Thus, from the jungle-funk of "Latin Funk Overseas" to the big-beat whirlwind of "Mi Rumba," and through the deep afro-beat of "Candele," the integrity of the barrio sound has been preserved; the electro has been placed at the service of the bata drums, the catharsis of the rumbas has been maintained at its maximum ("Energia Solar," "Mi Rumba"), the salsa has been strengthened in its original ruggedness, and the trance has been rebuilt in the spirit of Santeria ceremonies under the influence of deep-house, dub, or breakbeat. --Luc Demont
