In a Haitian city, Samuel’s peaceful life is brutally disrupted following the kidnapping of his journalist father by the army. Forced to flee, Samuel embarks clandestinely for the United States, where he hopes to find his mother, who he was told had passed away. From Miami to Montreal by way of New York, his journey is marked by encounters with people living on the margins of North American society. To give meaning to his experience of the world, Samuel draws on the unconditional love he feels for a mother he has, however, never known.
