Amazon.ca The exotic "Zobi La Mouche" had been flying over international airwaves for over two years when Les Négresses Vertes decided to take the battle cry of their debut album, the classic Mlah, to other dance floors. Once again enhanced by the personality of Noël Rota, alias Helno, a legendary singer with a popular swagger, Les Négresses Vertes headed off on vacation under "Le Soleil de Bodega." Carrying in their luggage a bit of the Paris-Paname atmosphere—infused with the punk ingredients that inhabited them and triggered phenomenal success across the English Channel—these uninhibited adventurers of French song set to work crafting the thirteen tracks of Familles nombreuses. A band with Latin blood, Les Négresses Vertes broke taboos, blithely crossing over raï and flamenco, rock energy, and realist tradition. With this second album recorded in 1991, these atypical musicians, decked out in safety pins, never tired of indolently singing "Voilà l'été." Worth listening to even in winter. --Sabrina Silamo
