Mr. Brochu, "The Boss", runs his gas station as best he can, despite the repeated thefts and hold-ups, competition from the self-serve stations around the corner - and his strained relationship with his two eldest sons, who want more out of life than running the Champlain service station. Through the minor tragedies of the Boss's life, we meet the locals who hang around the gas station, trading stories and having a good laugh....

The second feature film written and directed by Louis Bélanger, it also establishes its author as one of the standout filmmakers in the Quebec cinematic landscape. In 1989, the world was pulsing with socio-political upheaval. It was difficult then for Mr. Brochu, alias the Boss, to continue keeping his gas station running the same way, with his regulars and his daily routine. Especially since Parkinson's disease is wearing him down and his two eldest sons are dreaming of photography and the blues. Devoid of misery and inspired by his own life, Bélanger depicts the effects of nascent globalization and its demand for efficiency on small businesses, through the daily life of the Brochu family. Extremely touching, he also imbues his film with remarkable authenticity and sincerity, notably thanks to Serge Thériault (the Boss), winner of a Jutra for his performance. Far from clichés of the "sensitive man" or the macho, Bélanger paints a tender portrait of men who are larger than life, sensitive and virile at the same time. Profound in its simplicity, poetic and serious, Gaz Bar Blues is as unsettling as it is moving. – Helen Faradji Special Features
