Details: Amazon.ca Katerine delves a little deeper into the path he began to explore on his excellent previous release, Les Créatures & l'Homme à trois mains (two discs released together). Even then, the Recyclers, a leading trio of French improvised music since the 90s (Benoît Delbecq on piano, Steve Arguëlles on drums, with guitarist Noël Akchoté replaced by Christophe Minck), were already nudging the singer, shaking up the polished, easy-listening arrangements of the universe found on some of his earlier (very good) albums. That said, the man is still marked by the Brazilian rhythms of bossa nova and the sophisticated arrangements inherited from Gainsbourg’s L'Histoire de Melody Nelson. To his palette of influences, however, he has recently added the slightly offbeat atmospheres that Brigitte Fontaine constructed for her productions on the Saravah label in the 70s ( Comme à la radio, for example), as evidenced here by a certain taste for surreal and quirky humor (see the priceless Fifrelin and Boulette that Katerine invented). Perpetually on the edge, Katerine is here by turns funny, subtle, melancholic, acidic, ambiguous... --Philippe Robert
