Details: Térez Montcalm presents her new album, I Know I’ll Be Alright, a delightful journey through her own compositions and some of her favorite songs, spanning all genres. Térez brings her own groove to tracks by Gilbert Bécaud, Neil Young, David Bowie, and Michael Jackson, delivering covers with breathtaking fervor and freedom. She makes no secret of the fact that she finds just as much pleasure in covers as in her own compositions. In this spirit, she presents five new songs. Under the direction of Jay Newland (producer for Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Juliette Gréco, and Ayo), she recorded in Brussels with pianist Pierre de Bethmann, bassist Christophe Wallemme, guitarist Jean-Sébastien Williams (the only Quebecer in her current band), Géraldine Laurent on saxophone for a few tracks, and drummer Fabrice Moreau. With a warm, husky voice, she continues to sculpt melodies from various genres into her own singular jazz, somewhere between the radiant elegance of the great historical divas and the instinctive passion of rockers. -------------------- The new album from Canadian singer Térez Montcalm – her seventh – has the title I Know I’ll Be Alright, and it weaves a passionate path between compositions from her own pen and some of her favourite songs by other writers, irrespective of genre. In the groove with Térez Montcalm here are such unlikely figures as Gilbert Bécaud, Neil Young, David Bowie or Michael Jackson, and her versions of the titles by the latter have a stunning fervour and freedom to them. Montcalm makes no secret of the fact that she derives just as much pleasure from 'covers' as she does from her own compositions. Five brand-new songs in all, inspired by her own life-experiences. Guided by Jay Newland – the producer of Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Juliette Gréco or Ayo – Térez recorded the album in Brussels with pianist Pierre de Bethmann, bassist Christophe Wallemme, guitarist Jean-Sébastien Williams (the only Quebec musician in her current group), Géraldine Laurent playing saxophone here and there, and drummer Fabrice Moreau. With a warm, husky voice, she continues sculpting melodies from all kinds of genres to make them her own, special jazz, somewhere in between the radiant elegance of history's great divas and the fiery instinct of the great rockers.
