Details: Amazon.ca It's not just Quebec singers who export well; comedians from La Belle Province do too! The solo show simply titled Kavanagh!, recorded at the Opéra de Massy near Paris, demonstrates just how well the Haitian-born comedian has managed to win over the French public. Adapted for France and directed by Pascal Legitimus (former member of Les Inconnus, a cult trio of French comedians), Kavanagh! is built in the American style, mixing monologues, impressions, and songs. Although he is a talented sound mimic and impressionist, Anthony Kavanagh does not yet have the finesse of Yvon Deschamps or the charisma of Eddie Murphy, both fairly obvious inspirations for his show. Some very good lines emerge—notably in the sketches about childbirth and adolescence—during this performance, which could, however, have benefited from more nuanced, less conventional writing. A 20-minute documentary, "Il était une voix," completes the DVD and reveals a funnier, more spontaneous Kavanagh. While thoroughly enjoyable, this release lacks that little something that sometimes allows one to consider comedy as art. --Helen Faradji
