Details: Amazon.ca A true champion of Quebec independent cinema, Robert Morin finally had a proper budget for his hard-hitting production, Le Nèg', a fictional human drama that delivers a stinging slap to casual, everyday racism. One night, deep in the Quebec countryside, a plaster lawn jockey is smashed, a young Black man is severely injured, and an elderly woman, Cédulie, is murdered. However, the inspectors assigned to the case will have a hard time untangling the versions of the various protagonists: Tâton, Canard, Josée, Samantha, and Polo, Cédulie's developmentally disabled son. Structured like Akira Kurosawa’s classic Rashomon, Le Nèg' skewers with sharp irony the hypocrisy, casual racism, selfishness, and solitude that shine through the characters' depositions. It is through Polo's testimony—a colorful, poetic allegory accompanied by a song from Fernand Gignac—that the ignoble truth will emerge. With fluid and rhythmic direction, Robert Morin juggles, as is his habit, with different levels of reality while forcing the viewer to look their own cowardice regarding racism straight in the eye. Playing with an intense dramatic progression, he delivers a brilliant and essential film with Le Nèg'. --Helen Faradji
