Author: Ferrell, Rachelle
Release Date: 16-04-2002
Details: Amazon.ca Summer 1991: originally from Pennsylvania and completely unknown, a young singer triumphs at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Her first record for Blue Note also caused a stir, with the Jazz Academy awarding her its prestigious Billie Holiday Prize. That Rachelle Ferrell has since moved away from jazz seems all the more regrettable now that this famous Montreux concert is being released. The repertoire remains essentially the same as that of her first Blue Note recording, but the versions she gives us here are certainly superior. On stage, Rachelle is a voice with an exceptional range, a voice full of soul and feeling. Totally liberated, allowing herself astounding octave leaps, the singer is electrifying. Two tracks recorded in 1997 needlessly round out this program. Rachelle sings them in French (!), without ever really managing to reach her best level. --Pierre de Chocqueuse
