Details: Gustav Mahler was the first composer to enrich his lieder with orchestral depth. The ANALEKTA label now presents an awe-inspiring rendition of three cycles of lieder from Gustav Mahler sung by the world-renowned German baritone Christian Gerhaher, accompanied by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, under the direction of Kent Nagano. The pieces performed on this recording were taken from concerts held on January 12 and 14, 2012, at the Maison symphonique de Montréal. This is the second collaboration between Christian Gerhaher and the OSM, the first album being Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth). “This recording of Mahler's song cycles is in many ways the fruit of a long and ongoing collaboration between Christian Gerhaher and the OSM, a collaboration which has included not only many concert appearances but also international touring and recording (Das Lied von der Erde). Mahler's creative genius and the refinement of Christian Gerhaher's extraordinary talent, interpretive sensitivity and imagination provoke both OSM and the listener into a relationship of intensely active collaboration. As with all our recording projects, we hope to both preserve Montreal's legacy of symphonic artistry by reaching beyond the confines of the concert hall to share great music to the broadest audience possible," said Kent Nagano.
