Amazon.ca For Television's debut album, Tom Verlaine chose Andy Johns as co-producer. Johns had recorded the Rolling Stones' Goat's Head Soup, a record despised by punks, but Verlaine loved its sickly ballads. And, in fact, Television didn't really dabble in punk: the intro to "Marquee Moon" is a far cry from the Ramones or Johnny Thunders. It sounds more like a stiff approximation of Thelonious Monk's clusters, and then the track unfolds slowly, multiplying guitar solos from Verlaine and Richard Lloyd in the style of Quicksilver Messenger Service. And the other classics on this album: "Prove It", "Venus", "See No Evil" have that same strangeness, that same slightly distant elegance that made Television a truly unique band. --Hubert Deshouse
