Details: Bachir Lazhar is a middle-aged Algerian immigrant seeking political refuge in Quebec. Bachir jumps at the opportunity to replace a Montreal elementary school teacher who committed suicide one night after class. The school's overworked principal is initially relieved. Bachir finds he has to deal with a 10-year-old pupil who is traumatized because he discovered the body of his teacher, and a girl whose interpretation of the event and resentment toward her friend provoke unforeseen revelations.-----After learning of the death of a sixth-grade teacher, Bachir Lazhar, a 50-year-old Algerian, offers his services as a substitute to the school principal. He claims to have been a teacher in Algiers and is available immediately. Bachir then meets a group of shaken but endearing children. The gap between them is apparent from the first day when Bachir gives them a dictation assignment beyond their reach, taken from Honoré de Balzac. A somewhat enigmatic character who has also experienced a tragedy of his own, Bachir Lazhar takes charge of a fragile class and helps them process their grief through the fundamental act of teaching. At school, no one knows about his life in Algeria or suspects that he risks deportation from Canada at any moment.
