Details: Product Description Gratton, Antoine Amazon.ca The funk of Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan is anything but outdated for Antoine Gratton. Drawing heavily from the genre to blend it at times with rock, and at others with electronica, the young singer creates a music all his own, to which he grafts light and unpretentious lyrics. Listening to Montréal Motel, his first album, one must admit that his approach yields good results. The Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes keyboards, and wah-wah guitars marry perfectly with his vocal lines, tinged with joual. Gratton, who benefited from excellent production, delivers dynamic pop and puts forward dense arrangements and inventive rhythms. Along the way, he allows himself a few adventures in the language of Shakespeare as well as a surprising cover of "Ma blonde m'aime," by Pierre Bertrand. One might reproach him for not having sufficiently refined his poetry or for giving in to an excess of sound layers, and we might perhaps regret his occasionally shaky voice, but one cannot deny that Montréal Motel is a well-made album that entertains straightforwardly. --Nicolas Houle
