Details: Amazon.ca A few years after directing the deliciously perverse War of the Roses, prolific actor Danny DeVito throws another stone into the pond of clean, polished cinema with Death to Smoochy, a hilarious satire of the world of children's television. After being involved in a sordid bribery and drug scandal, host Rainbow Randolph is no longer making young viewers laugh. The producers replace him with Smoochy, a pink stuffed rhinoceros man whose sincerity is matched only by his good intentions. But can he survive in an environment ruled by corrupt agents, jealous producers, and the Irish mob? To show us the dark underbelly of this supposedly harmless children's universe, Danny DeVito dips his pen in cynicism and clearly enjoys the ferocity as much as we do. By conscientiously and systematically overstepping boundaries, he delivers a truly refreshing film. With Robin Williams in a delectable role against type as a fallen, vengeful star with a foul mouth, and Edward Norton perfect as the faux-naïf, Death to Smoochy is an incisive comedy, sometimes downright mean, but above all, totally jubilant. And even if the sweet ending seems a bit lazy and pious, it doesn't manage to spoil this concentrate of "politically incorrect." Enjoy! --Helen Faradji
