Details: The Japanese scene has long been birthing the most delirious bands. Whether it's the noise avant-garde of Merzbow or C.C.C.C., the unbridled rock of the Boredoms that makes the Beastie Boys look like a barbershop quartet, or the free improvisation of Keiji Haino. Many have tried to explain it, notably by theorizing on the specificity of Japanese metropolises and the country's history, a mixture of tradition and modernity. Among the newcomers in 2001 is the trio The Mad Capsule Markets. A glance at the cover is enough to understand how much this band owes to the aesthetics of sci-fi films, local B-movies, video games, and manga. The iconography is striking (like the music video for "Pulse") and the music, often violent, aims to be a mix of metal, industrial, and technoid BPMs celebrated with just the right amount of punk attitude. Never pretentious or detached (everything here invites a literal interpretation), the group is convincing: to get an idea, listen to "All The Time In Sunny Beach" first. Addictive. --Hervé Comte
