Details: The first solo album from IAM rapper Geoffroy Mussard, alias Jo, better known by his stage name Shurik'n, a reference to the Taoist philosophy he follows. Entirely produced by the artist himself, Où je vis is a highly cohesive record, the creation of a focused mind that never wavers for a moment. We can bet that his practice of martial arts has something to do with this. Little inclined toward whimsy, in 1998 Shurik'n churned out direct lyrics that don't get too bogged down in formalism. And while the assessment is bitter, the predominantly oriental samples provide a welcome touch of exoticism. From "Samouraï" to the final track "Manifeste," featuring his cohort Akhenaton, the tone reflects the social climate of major Western metropolises at the end of the century. Faithful to the OM credo, the Marseille rapper of Malagasy descent goes "straight to the goal." --José Guerreiro
