This double disc is no exception to the rule. It must be said that it is packed with hits presented in chronological order. From the famous "Grand Jacques" released in the mid-fifties, to the "Marquises" of 1977, one traverses a masterpiece of French chanson in thirty-seven tracks. From the fifties, the compiler has selected: "Quand on n'a que l'amour" (1956), "Je ne sais pas" (1958), "La Valse à mille temps" (1959). Then follow the yé-yé years (1960-1965), paradoxically the most creative decade: "Les Flamandes" (1960), "Ne me quitte pas" (1960), "Le Plat Pays" (1962), "Rosa" (1962), "Madeleine" (1962), "Les Bourgeois" (1962), "Bruxelles" (1962), "Les Vieux" (1963), "Mathilde" (1964), "Les Bonbons" (1964) in two versions, "Jef" (1964), "Au suivant" (1964), "Amsterdam" (1964), "Ces gens-là" (1965). After farewells at the Olympia in 1967, Brel would prefer musical comedy to recitals. Indeed, after "La Chanson des vieux amants" (1967), "Vesoul" (1969)... , he adapted "Man of La Mancha" from which he sings "La Quête" ("Impossible Dream"), sharing the track with Dario Moreno, who was scheduled to appear on stage alongside him. After a few years in cinema and the Pacific islands, the greatest of the Jacques of chanson passed away in the middle of the flowers. -- A.B.
