Details: One could ramble at length about the influence of pop on the raï scene as it is practiced in Paris. Thanks to her producer Bob Coke, a former road companion of Ben Harper, Souad Massi—now established in our capital—has known, unlike some of her peers, how to avoid all the pitfalls of a predictable, FM-formatted production. It is therefore a huge surprise to discover this young woman (she was 28 at the time of the recording), rich in an oriental culture that also encompasses influences from rock and flamenco. To the point that her intimate and sensual ballads would almost make her pass for a new priestess of folk who also happens to express herself in Arabic. Oud, electric guitars, and violins get along well on this sophisticated and gently melancholic *Raoui* that never forgets chaâbi. An undeniable success. --Hervé Comte
