But the guise slips away as their passion ignites. Now Will's quill again begins to flow, this time turning love into words, as Viola becomes his real-life Juliet and Romeo finds his reason to exist. London, 1593; the penniless playwright William Shakespeare is struggling to write his new comedy, "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter." But things change when he meets the young noblewoman Viola De Lesseps, one of his admirers. Although she is betrothed to the opportunistic Lord Wessex, Viola begins a passionate love affair with William, who then finds the inspiration for his play, which has since become the tragedy "Romeo and Juliet." And it is Viola who, disguised as a boy to bypass the laws of the time, lands the role of Romeo.
