Details: Amazon.ca Born in 1524 and passing away in 1585, Pierre de Ronsard left behind an immense literary body of work grouped within a collective known as La Pléiade. The poet collaborated with the greatest musicians of the French Royal Court, the two monarchs he served: Charles IX and Henri III. He composed a vast anthology of songs, and more than 200 of his poems were set to music by about thirty composers. Most were intended to convince the kings of the benefits of music. Ronsard asserted that the greatest composer of his time was Orlando de Lassus. Thus, his works were influenced by the spirit of Lassus and were grouped into books including the Odes, Amours, Folastries, Elegies, masques, and pastoral poems… Listening to such gems, one understands why, centuries later, Bizet, Gounod, Honegger, Poulenc, Dukas, etc., used his poems to set them to music! --Étienne Bertoli Product Description In the mid-16th century, it was fashionable to set Ronsard's verses to music. But in the 1570s, every composer who "counted" had to dedicate one or more entire collections of polyphonic songs to him! The Janequins take up the torch, in a way, with this selection of the most beautiful melodies the prince of poets could have inspired. This title was first released in 1994."
