Bernard Adamus / Sorel Soviet So What - CD (Used)

Release Date: 09-25-2015

Details: Parties, love, friendship: a trinity of infinite possibilities that Bernard Adamus expands upon with stories of those around him. Three years after the sweeping remorse of his second album, No 2, he is back with Sorel Soviet So What, and he’s in top form! In order not to dwell on the blues once again, he has pushed aside the clouds and dejection in favor of good times rolling, writing even rawer lyrics that live in the paradox of being more personal but less intimate. Sorel Soviet So What (already a contender for album of the year), is an exultant and vibrant collection of country with mojo and blues that grooves, continuing to tell the tales of his surroundings while opening up to the world. These eleven new tracks propel the country and blues that have become Adamus’s trademark into an expanded and flourishing musical range, augmented by surging rock n’ roll, sweaty soul, and a light Hawaiian breeze. Eleven tracks that turn gloom on its head in favor of the opposite, banking on the vibrancy, warmth, and liveliness of their arrangements. Recorded almost entirely in the vast room of Breakglass Studio in Montreal (with the exception of two tracks captured in the legendary basement of Eric Villeneuve, the loyal producer of all his albums), Sorel Soviet So What testifies to Adamus’s work surrounded by seasoned musicians. Guys all playing live, without headphones, so that the energy of each instrument spills into the others' recordings. It is an album that lives on the ardor of the studio’s collective dynamic. It’s Fred Fortin rapping, Jeannot Bournival’s saxophone going wild, the proven pedal steel of Joe Grass, and the backing vocals of Daphné Brissette (Canailles), Anna Frances Meyer (Les Deuxluxes), and Nicole Carmen Godbout. It is, above all, Bernard Adamus shining bright, dropping his guitar on half the tracks to let his voice go like a poor man's Amy Winehouse. It’s a huge personality overflowing even more, and it’s glorious.
