Details: Amazon.ca While Americans delight in soul music, Quebecers rarely touch this style popularized by our neighbors to the south such as Macy Gray, D'Angelo, and Erykah Badu. After newcomer Corneille ( Parce qu'on vient de loin), it is Luck Mervil's turn to dare to offer an exclusively soul record to ears unaccustomed to the genre, following in the footsteps of Génération Motown, a musical revue presented in 2002 in which he played Marvin Gaye. The performer of Clopin in Notre Dame de Paris takes on production duties for the first time and wins his bet with this powerful, energetic, and warm Soul. Waltzing between explosive moments ("J'aime à aimer", "Le Soul Power", the excellent "Sincère") and tender songs ("Des Ailes"), Mervil demonstrates the full range of his vocal register. Aside from a few awkward moments in the songwriting ("Est-ce que tu la sens?", for example, and its unsubtle double entendre), the singer is more intimate than ever. He moves the listener with "Mézanmi," a Creole track co-written with his brother Pierre, in which he takes a critical look at Haiti, his country of origin. We already knew him as a formidable performer. With Soul, Luck Mervil provides tangible proof of his great talent. --Frédéric Boudreault
