Details: Product Description This delightfully entertaining romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon (LEGALLY BLONDE) as sophisticated Melanie Carmichael, a rising New York clothing designer who suddenly finds herself engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor. But this is no fairy tale romance for Melanie. She has skeletons in her fashion-filled closet that include Jake -- the backwoods husband she married in high school who refuses to divorce her. Determined to end their marriage and sever all ties with her past once and for all, Melanie returns to Alabama. But home starts to tug at her heartstrings, and what she thought she wanted may not be what she wants at all. Amazon.ca Rising American star Reese Witherspoon had already saved the comedy Legally Blonde from disaster. She does it again by making Sweet Home Alabama, directed by Andy Tennant, a more than respectable romantic film. Melanie Carmichael has everything she could ever dream of. A noted fashion designer, beautiful, she is about to marry the most eligible bachelor in New York: the son of the Mayor (played by a delightful Candice Bergen). But before fully living her fairy tale, she must return to her hometown in Alabama to divorce her first husband, Jake. It is true that in this irredeemably sentimental Sweet Home Alabama, love ends up triumphing over cultural and social divides in a somewhat simple and predictable way, and the soundtrack is sometimes annoying. On the other hand, the exaggeration of the gap between the posh and trendy world of New York and the rustic universe of Alabama gives rise to some quite funny and dynamic situations. While the whole film lacks a certain cynicism that would make it zestier, it is nevertheless easy to get carried away by the freshness and personality of Reese Witherspoon. The young actress makes her character more than a scatterbrained girl and adds greatly to the charm of this comedy with its rather honorable finale. --Helen Faradji
