Details: Amazon.ca A new version of the cult fantasy film Ringu, by Japanese director Hideo Nakata, The Ring, directed by Gore Verbinski, draws us into a particularly agonizing suspense. A mysterious videotape causes the death, seven days later, of anyone who watches it. Reality or urban legend? This is what Rachel Keller, a journalist, will try to discover when her niece dies under more than strange circumstances and she finds herself forced to engage in this race against death herself. The Ring manages to maintain a stressful tension until its very clever trompe-l'œil ending. Verbinski constantly manipulates the viewer's expectations thanks to an appropriate soundtrack and the insertion of a few rather disturbing shock scenes, provoking many more jolts than Nakata's Ringu, with its very sober structure. Despite the greenish lighting that constantly recalls the aesthetic of The Sixth Sense, and despite the doll-like appearance of Naomi Watts (noted in Mulholland Drive), who is more or less credible, The Ring is the kind of film to watch very late at night, perfect for playing at scaring yourself. --Helen Faradji
