Details: Product Description Oliver Jones Amazon.ca Montreal pianist Oliver Jones, who had announced his retirement in 2000, allowed himself to reverse his decision for a visit to the studio. Five tracks recorded with the complicity of bassist Skip Bey, including the excellent "Girl Talk" and "Lullaby of Birdland," had been sitting on the shelf since 1986. He was therefore willing to reconnect with his colleague to complete, some 15 years later, the unfinished album that would become Then and Now. After all these years, the jazzmen display the same chemistry: they inhabit the revisited standards with ease and demonstrate a dynamism that sustains attention. Bey's playing may have become slightly more staccato and Jones's less fiery, but considering the quality of the material presented here, these details seem quite futile. Then and Now is indeed pure candy, especially for those who lamented the pianist's early retirement. --Nicolas Houle
