Details: Amazon.ca Jazz musician Michel Cusson, formerly of the group Uzeb, once again demonstrates the agility with which he can embrace diverse universes. After the jazzy soundtrack of the television series Omertà, the fairground music of Bunker, Le Cirque, and the more rock-oriented compositions of Dernier Chapitre and Tag, he ventures into a lyrical register to depict the atmosphere of Charles Binamé's film Un homme et son péché, adapted from Claude-Henri Grignon's novel. Avoiding the pitfall of stereotypical folk music, Cusson opts for a classicism where his six-string guitar and percussion accentuate the most dramatic moments ("Le Duel"), where the viola d'amore and a string quartet highlight the passion inhabiting the characters ("Péché mortel"), and where, finally, the accordion underscores the rural and popular nature of this love story ("Cœur d'or"). This highly successful album ends, however, with a less successful song by Luc Plamondon. Performed by Isabelle Boulay, "Depuis le premier jour" is appealing for its melody, which reprises the soundtrack's recurring theme, but is disappointing due to its clumsy lyrics. If one overlooks this track, Cusson's creations provide a most pleasant listening experience, reviving with precision and simplicity the saga of the mythical Donalda, Alexis, and Séraphin. --Nicolas Houle
