Details: Amazon.ca United by Fate is an album with an impressive pedigree. In the 90s Walter Schreifels headed three acts--Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits and Quicksand--that defined and then redefined the very nuts and bolts of straightedge and hardcore punk. Now he's back as the lead singer of NYC's Rival Schools with this imposing album that stands shoulder to shoulder with futuristic hardcore statements like Will Haven's Carpe Diem and At The Drive-In's Relationship Of Command. Featuring drummer Sammy Siegler (also of Gorilla Biscuits and Youth Of Today) and New York hardcore veterans Cache Tolman and Ian Love on respective bass and guitar, Rival Schools certainly fields an experienced team; but United By Fate is anything but a punk relic. This is 40 precious minutes of anthemic, rousing and utterly vital rock & roll from the guitar-strafing emo-with-muscles opener "Travel By Telephone" and breezy vintage-pop nugget "My Echo" to the monumental, heavy acoustics of "Undercovers On". The ultimate tone is one of triumph though. As guitars tangle joyfully through one another on the closing fanfare of "Hooligans For Life" you can't help but feel it's depressingly seldom that such celebration seems so well deserved. United By Fate finds the straightedge veterans back at the cutting edge. --Louis Pattison
